someone i know gives donations to charities in people's names as a gift to them for the holidays. i always request the dog/cat shelter donation as my "gift". but he sends money to oxfam and other causes in the names of his friends and family. then you get a xmas card saying happy holidays and a donation was given in your name. somehow i like it. would selfishly rather have some flowery foot oil from the body shop, but a donation of a goat or an ox to a family in afghanistan, that's pretty good.
